WORKSHOP PRESENTATION

I stand at the front of the class with a flip chart and place

a completed picture on the wall behind me. I use Cartoon Characters as they capture the children's imagination and keep them focused.

The pupils are seated at their tables with A4 pieces of paper or sketchbooks, pencils and erasers (all supplied by the school).

I break the pictures down by highlighting individual lines and areas of the completed pictures, draw it step by step on my flip chart and after each step the pupils also draw the relevant step on their piece of paper by following my instructions and watching my demonstration.

Everybody uses a dotted line technique as this allows elements of the pictures to be changed more easily and makes the creative process more accessible regardless of age or ability.

I work the room by asking different questions throughout the workshop sessions and this helps everybody with regards to maintaining good levels of concentration and focus.

Full workshop days consist of either three or four sessions based on the year groups involved, structure

of the school day, class sizes and the time of the year. When possible, the workshop days are completed with

a Motivational Assembly.

I work with pupils in KS1, KS2 and KS3 and the later the workshops are delivered in the academic year, the more the sessions benefit Reception aged pupils.

There are a wide range of benefits if teachers can take

part and whenever possible, I recommend they do so. The session lengths are important because the longer the sessions are, the better results the pupils achieve which increases the confidence and self-esteem boosts and the more references to life skills I can implement within the sessions.

Another reason why the session lengths are key relates to the building of resilience element of the workshops, some parts of the pictures require pupils to make more than one attempt to be successful so that is factored in to the

session lengths..

SKILLS BASED LEARNING

The workshop sessions promote Skills Based Learning as they require the pupils to use a wide range of skills with regards to not only the creative process but also in other elements of the sessions like answering the questions I ask and problem solving. Other key skills which are utilized in the sessions include observational, listening, measuring, thinking and decision making skills. Research has indicated that learners remember more effectively when they can use skills to access, process

and express their knowledge. The emphasis on Skills Based Learning is evident throughout the sessions as is the previously mentioned concepts of Independent Learning and Cognitive Thinking.

MATHS & ART CROSS CURRICULAR LINK

The workshops have a Maths and Art Cross Curricular link as everybody completes a picture but the creative

process focuses on a Mathematical approach. The elements covered include Spatial Awareness, Ratios, Proportions, Fractions, Shapes, Angle of Lines,

Length of Lines, Coordinates and Measuring Distances. Symmetry is a very significant part of the pictures, this ensures that the results are not always achievable at the first attempt but this aspect does prove beneficial

especially with regards to building resilience.

GROWTH MINDSET ELEMENTS

The workshops and motivational assemblies are linked to The Growth Mindset as they not only highlight the importance of Growth Mindset traits including Trying Your Best, Persevering & Being Resilient, Not Giving Up, Learning From Mistakes and Problem Solving by engaging the brain BUT they also give visual evidence of why all of those elements are beneficial in the form of the

completed pictures. The motivational assembly includes further references to The Growth Mindset but also highlights how all of those elements can help pupils further not only at school but also for life in general.

MENTAL HEALTH & WELL BEING

These benefits are obtained from the workshops in different ways but confidence and self-esteem boosts will be very evident during the sessions and at the end

of the sessions when the pictures are completed.
