WORKSHOP PRESENTATION
I stand at the front of the class with a flip chart and place a completed picture on the wall behind me. I use Cartoon Characters as they capture the children's imagination and keep them focused.
The pupils are seated at their tables with A4 pieces of paper or sketchbooks, pencils and erasers (all supplied by the school).
I break the pictures down by highlighting individual lines and areas of the completed pictures, draw it step by step on my flip chart and after each step the pupils also draw the relevant step on their piece of paper by following my instructions and watching my demonstration.
Everybody uses a dotted line technique as this allows elements of the pictures to be changed more easily and makes the creative process more accessible regardless of age or ability.
I work the room by asking different questions throughout the workshop sessions and this helps everybody with regard to maintaining good levels of concentration and focus.
Full workshop days consist of either three or four sessions based on the year groups involved, structure of the school day, class sizes and the time of the year. When possible, the workshop days are completed with a Motivational Assembly.
I work with pupils in KS1, KS2 and KS3 and the later the workshops are delivered in the academic year, the more the sessions benefit Reception aged pupils.
There are a wide range of benefits if teachers can take part and whenever possible, I recommend they do so. The session lengths are important because the longer the sessions are, the better results the pupils achieve which increases the confidence and self-esteem boosts and the more references to life skills I can implement within the sessions.
Another reason why the session lengths are key relates to the building of resilience element of the workshops, some parts of the pictures require pupils to make more than one attempt to be successful so that is factored in to the session lengths.

SKILLS BASED LEARNING
The workshop sessions promote Skills Based Learning as they require the pupils to use a wide range of skills with regards to not only the creative process but also in other elements of the sessions like answering the questions I ask and problem solving.
Other key skills which are utilized in the sessions include observational, listening, measuring, thinking and decision making skills. Research has indicated that learners remember more effectively when they can use skills to access, process and express their knowledge.
The emphasis on Skills Based Learning is evident throughout the sessions as is the previously mentioned concepts of Independent Learning and Cognitive Thinking.
MATHS & ART CROSS CURRICULAR LINK
The workshops have a Maths and Art Cross Curricular link as everybody completes a picture but the creative process focuses on a Mathematical approach.
The elements covered include Spatial Awareness, Ratios, Proportions, Fractions, Shapes, Angle of Lines, Length of Lines, Coordinates and Measuring Distances. Symmetry is a very significant part of the pictures, this ensures that the results are not always achievable at the first attempt but this aspect does prove beneficial especially with regard to building resilience.
GROWTH MINDSET ELEMENTS
The workshops and motivational assemblies are linked to The Growth Mindset as they not only highlight the importance of Growth Mindset traits including Trying Your Best, Persevering & Being Resilient, Not Giving Up, Learning From Mistakes and Problem Solving by engaging the brain BUT they also give visual evidence of why all of those elements are beneficial in the form of the completed pictures.
The motivational assembly includes further references to The Growth Mindset but also highlights how all of those elements can help pupils further not only at school but also for life in general.
MENTAL HEALTH & WELL BEING
These benefits are obtained from the workshops in different ways but confidence and self-esteem boosts will be very evident during the sessions and at the end of the sessions when the pictures are completed.

ALL SOULS' CE PRIMARY SCHOOL - ROCHDALE, GREATER MANCHESTER ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"We had the pleasure of having Ian in school to deliver his art/maths workshops for Key Stage 2 students. Ian not only delivered engaging and creative sessions but also skilfully promoted a growth mind-set and resilience throughout his teaching. He encouraged students to embrace challenges, view mistakes as opportunities for learning, and celebrate their progress. The positive and supportive atmosphere he created allowed every student to feel confident in their abilities, regardless of their skill level. Ian's ability to instil these important life skills through art was truly inspiring. The students left each session feeling empowered and motivated, which is a testament to his dedication and passion for both the subject and the development of the children. Highly recommend Ian for any future workshops."
REEDNESS PRIMARY SCHOOL - EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"Ian came to our school to deliver a workshop and staff training. Ian has been to our school before and we loved his sessions so much that we were eager to invite him back. The sessions Ian puts on are fantastic and give the children a real sense of achievable success. He is great with the children and staff and provides excellent feedback to the head teacher about all aspects of the days. Because he visits so many schools it is great to see how your children compare across a number of factors to other schools in the country. The growth mind-set approach is key for our school and Ian highlighted this to the children. He draws on his own experience which makes the workshop realistic for the children as they can see the journey that Ian has been on. I would book Ian again in a heartbeat!"
CHATER INFANT SCHOOL - HERTFORDSHIRE ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"Ian brings a high level of professionalism and dedication to his workshops. Ian is so passionate about developing children's mind set and attitude. We highly value the work Ian has done with our children, it is an opportunity for them to test and build upon the resilience skills they develop at Chater Infant School. Ian's sessions are uplifting, fun and engaging. Our children understand they can learn from their mistakes and Ian has helped to reinforce this. Thank you, Ian."
KERESFORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL - SOUTH YORKSHIRE⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"Ian was by far the most organised and well prepared visitor I have had the pleasure of working with. His commitment to his role and to his business is exemplary. The workshops were pitched well and key messages regarding resilience and well being were woven in throughout. The children were thoroughly immersed in their work and were proud of their completed art work. Both the assembly and staff development sessions displayed Ian's wealth of knowledge and expertise for work on growth mind-set and provided both staff and children much food for thought. The feedback given following the visit was incredibly detailed and insightful. An excellent day which was very fairly priced. I would recommend both the workshops and staff training session."
